Strawberry Banana Milkshake
Summer’s simple pleasures.
Saying that I love berry season in southern Quebec is definitely an understatement. Who doesn’t love nature’s candy? Strawberries are the first berries to ripen around the St-Jean Baptiste long weekend (another reason to celebrate!). It just so happens that this coincides with the end of school, so naturally the sweet flavour of sun-ripened strawberries will always be associated to the joys and freedoms of summer holidays.
My father loved bringing us strawberry picking, disguising free child labour as a family activity – a clever ploy in hindsight. My brother and I would go on the hunt for the largest, sweetest strawberries we could find, taking our time to sample as many as we could while filling up our baskets. It was an important task, as we had quotas to fill: we needed to fill our chest freezer so that we could enjoy berry smoothies for breakfast all year long.
After a good haul of strawberries, we were rewarded with a slice of shortcake aux fraises, which consisted of a store-bought vanilla sponge cake, freshly whipped cream, and a heap of fresh strawberries. Can you name a more iconic duo than strawberries and whip cream? I’ll wait.
A spoonful of strawberry ice cream, shortcake or a strawberry milkshake always transport me back to my dad’s farmhouse kitchen. I love the nostalgia in remembering those carefree summer holidays and happy memories with my family. This recipe is my attempt to share that nostalgia with you all!
